Proper Dental Hygiene with Braces
Once you have your braces put on, it is more important than ever to maintain good oral hygiene. Retainers, braces, wires and bands all tend to trap food particles making it difficult to brush or floss them away. Following these steps is the best way to prevent plaque build-up, gum disease and tooth decay.
During Hesperia, CA orthodontics treatments, it is advisable that you brush your teeth four times each day to avoid stuck food particles between the teeth. Ideally, you could do this after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner and at bedtime.
Flossing can take a good deal of time and patience while wearing braces but it is important. Floss at night before bed to ensure that your teeth are clean.
Use a floss threader to get under the archwire. To do this, you’ll pull a small amount of the floss from the dispenser into the threader. Then, slide it up and down each tooth. Do not use too much force or put an unusual amount of pressure on the floss.
If you are concerned about inflammation of the gums, try using a hydrogen peroxide antiseptic mouth rinse. Not only will this prevent infection and irritation but often keeps the inflammation from ever happening in the first place.
Use two teaspoons of the rinse for one minute at a time. This can be done daily up to four times after each brushing.
The interdental toothbrush is great for cleaning around the archwires and braces. Just be sure that you use it gently so you don’t damage the wires.
Use a sodium fluoride gel to prevent tooth decay while wearing braces. This gel is capable of replacing minerals in the enamel and killing bacteria. It is not a substitute for brushing or flossing; just another addition to your bedtime routine.
Use a small strip on your toothbrush and apply it. Spit it out after one minute and avoid drinking or eating for at least 30 minutes.
Cleaning the Appliance
If you have a removable appliance, it is important that you brush and clean this as well. Food particles can accumulate and sit against your teeth. Soak it daily with a denture-cleaning tablet and water at room temperature.
